Post-wedding post

Hi all. I never got a chance to post about the wedding, but it was as amazing a day as I could have possibly hoped for! There were times it was a blur; never in my life could I have imagined five hours going so quickly. But I remember the day completely, and was immensly glad for all my friends and family that were there to celebrate with Diana and I. I hope you all liked it.

Well, now we have the photographic evidence that we did NOT just dream up the day, regardless of how fast it went by :)

We got the pictures yesterday, and I’m going to have them uploaded by the end of the week. I’ll put another post here when they are all up (all 450 or so).

Everyone is asking me if I am nervous yet. Some are asking me (you know who you are) if I am getting cold feet. None of that is happening, its just anxiousness! I want it to be Saturday already. I know I’m not going to get much sleep at all on Friday night/Saturday morning.

Fortunately though, I only have a VERY small amount of things to do before the wedding.

  • Go to my Bachelor Party (Tuesday – Tonight)
  • Pick up my Tux (Thursday)
  • Go to the Rehersal Dinner (Friday)
  • Pack all the stuff I need to bring and HOPE TO GOD that I don’t forget anything (rings, tux, shoes, etc.)
  • Try to enjoy my own wedding and not feel overwhelmed by any of the attention.

I am lucky though to have so many friends and family attending the wedding. Special thanks go out to:

  • My brother Mike – soon to be Dr. Chauvet (congratulations Mike! I know you don’t have your test scores back yet, but I’m positive you aced them!
  • My friend Lee (congrats on your new job in the city too!) – You’ve been my friend longer then anyone and I’m glad that you will be there with me at the wedding
  • My Best Man Bruce – I don’t know what I would do without you. I probably wouldn’t have my job that I have now if not for what I learned from you computer-wise
  • My father, who regardless of the arguments (sorry – debates) we would ocassionally have (and often enjoy), I always knew loved me so much and I know he is proud of me. Our interests may be different, but I am like him in so many ways
  • My mother – God bless her. I kept saying that I wished she could be with us on this happy day, but I know she will be. She’ll be watching over us from Heaven. I am who I am because of her most of all. I only wish Diana could have known her
  • And of course Diana! Before I met her, my life was shallow, boring, and depressing. I am a much better, happier, more content person because of her.

So to those of you who will be at the wedding, I look forward to seeing you! And to those who couldn’t make it, I wish you could come, but I hope you’ll be with us in spirit on that day.

A student again

Well, its been a while, but I registered for a class again. I’ve thought about possibly getting an MBA, and decided to at least start taking what I would need to take for that.

I do have to take some fundamental business undergrad courses, since I wasn’t a business majore before. Since I was an economics minor, and took a good deal of math/statistics courses, I don’t have to take all of them, but there are some basics I will have to take. Some accounting, some management, some marketing, etc. I’m starting off with just one class next semester – Financial Accounting. It starts at the end of August, and is Wednesday nights at 6:30PM.

One advantage of working at the college, is I only need to pay a paltry sum (<$30) to take the course (since the only fee not waived is the activity fee). I don’t imagine the course will be too difficult, but I will definately work to make sure I get an A in the class.

Netflix

Since I’m no longer going to be doing World of Warcraft, I’ve started up Netflix again. Haven’t done it in about three years or so, but there is more then enough worth renting now (plus I’m getting a $12 rebate from AAA for joining).

I’m mixed on the new Netflix. I really like the split queues you can do (so Diana and I can have seperate queues/recommendations/etc), and how you can see your friends recommendations. The site though seems very busy. Oh well. I’ll have to see if I get my DVDs tomorrow as expected.

I’ve also ordered a new spindle of blank DVDs which of course has NOTHING to do with the netflix membership ;)

I’m done with warcraft

I can’t take it anymore. No more World of Warcraft for me. The server outages have been intolerable and there is no reason to pay for this anymore. I liked the game when I could play without issues, but it has been horrible since release, and intolerable for the past week.

I still have my account active until around April 10th, but other then that, I’m done. Maybe when (if) they get their problems fixed I’ll come back in a couple of months. If I consider reactivating the account, and there are still these server problems – someone smack me.

Dark Glory War Cover Fortress Draconis CoverWhen Dragons Rage CoverGrand Crusade Cover

Finally finshed the last book in Michael A. Stackpole’s Dragon Crown War novels. There are four books, The Dark Glory War (prequel), Fortress Draconis, When Dragons Rage, and the final book Grand Crusade.

The first book, Dark Glory War, is in the form of a memoir written by the main character, Tarrant Hawkins. Tarrant, and his friends Bosleigh (Leigh) Norrington, Naysmith Carver, and Rounce Playfair begin the book preparing to go on a coming of age ceremony. Basically, they are taken via a carriage a long distance away from town (a couple days walk) and made to get back to town as part of their trials. Things go horribly wrong when a Temeryx, a beast from the northern land of Aurolan (the image I get of them was a raptor type beast that was more like a bird then a dinosaur though) attacked them. From then on, they start an adventure to first find out why the beasts and others like it are in their territory. They find out that a Norrington (at various times believed to be either Leigh or his father Lord Kenwick Norrington) is destined to put an end to the scourge of the north – Chrytine the sorcerous emperess of Aurolan. They do battle both individually, and with armies against Chrytine, and her armies led by the Sullanciri – her magically enhanced (and in some cases undead) generals. I cannot go into too much without spoiling the plot, but while reading I felt that I instantly liked the main character, Tarrant, which is what made this book so enjoyable. The book is well written, definately worth a read. The ending is NOT typical fantasy fare which is not always found in cliche filled heroes save the world novels.

The next three books are basically about the struggle of Will Norrington (the recently discovered son of Leigh Norrington), Alexia of Okranell (the princess of a country ravaged and conqured by Chrytine), Kerrigan Reese (a young, naive, but VERY powerful wizard, trained from birth to be a weapon against Chrytine), the Vorquelf Resolute, and a mysterious human known only as Kedyn’s Crow. The books are a good read, but I felt that they weren’t as enjoyable as the prequel novel. The end of Grand Crusade also felt very rushed (even though it is the longest of the four books) and that did ruin some of the enjoyment for me.

It is worth reading the series though. Its nice to have a series of novels that you could read all of them in a few weeks. They were all released over a span of a few years, and all before I started reading the first novel. I have so many authors that I love and hate at the same time. Love because I like their books, and hate because they often take forever to release the next book in their series.

Everybody Hula!

Over the past week I’ve been messing around at work with this new software called Hula, an open source project from Novell based on their old Net Mail. It seems like it will be pretty impressive.

I’m especially interested in the calendering features and some of the other ideas we have. It will be nice to have a shared calendaring system other then the giants of Lotus Notes, Exchange, and GroupWise. I already have a test system going of it, but it still is an unfinished project. I’ll have to wait and see how things develop.

A screenshot of the calendar is below:

Another impending snowfall

You know I used to like winter. When I was younger… heck until I stopped being a student on campus. Now it is at best it is annoying and an inconvenience. At worst it is dangerous…

The other day (tuesday) I was leaving my car at a parking lot (one a bit away from the HAB building where I work). There is a decent slope on the path between the lot I parked in, and the lot next to my building (20 degrees I would say at the worst point). I was walking along there, noting the horrible job of shovelling that was done, and realizing it was very slippery. I took small almost baby steps at the worst areas hoping to not slip, but to no avail. Slipped, fell onto my back and slid down the hill. Got the wind knocked out of me pretty badly, but nothing broken thankfully. Sprained my wrist pretty bad though.

Now today, more snow coming. I’m supposed to go to the Allergist in Poughkeepsie, but not sure if they’ll close early (or if I’ll even want to go there tonight). Still have to call and check. Oh well. At least if I do end up there, I’ll get to have some Quiznos. Too bad they don’t have one in New Paltz.

Site Redesign

Well, the site is a good deal different. I took the lead of Bruce and updated WordPress to the newest version. There are a lot of improvements, especially in the theme engine. I downloaded this theme from wpthemes.info. I hope you like it, let me know what you think. Though I like the stock image of the rail through the forest above, I’m playing around with some other images for it.

I still have some customization work to do on it, but that will get done eventually.

Expected snowfall totals are incredibly hard to find online. You go to the major sites (weather.com, accuweather.com, wunderground.com, etc.) and either just find a generic forecast of ‘snow’ (real f***ing helpful) or snowfall totals for just a small period. Knowing what the snowfall is ‘through saturday evening’ isn’t very helpful when the snow is supposed to go through Sunday.

Snow through Saturday Evening

Well on the local radio station, WRRV they were saying around 10″ for the Hudson Valley. We’ll see if that holds true.

Why does it always have to happen on the weekend though? Seriously….

Oh well, at least I’ll make sure to get some decent snow pictures and put them in the gallery.
